Q.
Is custom software more expensive than off-the-shelf software?
A. Yes it is. Anything that is "custom"
is one of a kind. That said, the difference may not be as dramatic
as you may believe. From
our development library, we
reuse as much code and as many setup screens as we possibly can.
This keeps your investment as low as possible.
Q.
Is it better to own our own database rather than pay someone else
to maintain it?
A. This is something that you'll have
to determine. Two of the big benefits of an in-house database are
that the responsiveness increases and the recurring fees are eliminated.
If you investigate these fees you'll find they often run in the
$10,000s per year.
Q.
We have an existing application that needs modification. Will you
work on these also?
A. Legacy applications are a large part of
our business. We require a few billable hours to orient ourselves
to the legacy application.
Q.
Can our data be imported into a new application?
A. We have built a software tool that automates
a large part of the process. We have successfully moved every client's
data.
Q.
Who owns the code after the application is built?
A. We cannot resell your application basically
unchanged. The manner in which certain functions are carried out,
within the application, are reusable. Here is an example. We can't
copy a book someone has written and resell it under another title.
However, the fact that the book used certain words doesn't prohibit
those words from being used in another book. If functions could
NOT be reused, the your program wouldn't exist because other applications
would have exhausted the available functions years ago.
Q.
Do you offer training?
A. We offer on-site training on any application
we build plus we have beginning to intermediate training
on Microsoft Access. We use Microsoft's NetMeeting for distance
learning which permits you to see our monitor with any browser.
